Public Priorities of Countermeasures During 10 Years After Chernobyl. G. V. Arkhangelskaya and I. A. Zykova, St. Petersburg Institute of Radiation Hygiene, 8, Mira Street, St. Petersburg, Russia
The study has been carried out in 1986-1995 on more then 5 thousand residents of contaminated, adjacent and distant (control) territories. The results of the surveys constantly demonstrated changes in population lifestyle in all land of areas. The changes in diet style remained for many years, and in 1993 this fact was found about 10% of the respondents even from the clean areas. It was revealed that population was not sufficiently informed about protective measures and their effectiveness.
Some contradictory evaluations of the protective measures by the population of contaminated territories were also found. Public priorities of countermeasures included the clean foodstuffs, better medical care, direct payment; better communal service and the decontamination of territories. The rating of these priorities almost did not charged during 10 years. The some social protection measures were more important than specific radiation ones for public opinion.
Population deficit knowledge about countermeasures and their results is continued to be the basis of negative psychological situation.
