Investigation of Cytogenetic Effects in Group of Children from Evacuated Area. Alexandra Yu. Bondar, Research Center for Radiation Medicine of AMS of Ukraine, Kiev

Purpose: A number of areas in Ukraine were severely contaminated by fallout from Chernobyl NPP Reactor accident in April 1986. The purpose of the study described here was to determine whether the exposures received by children evacuated from Pripyat town were sufficiently high to produce a measurable increase in chromosomal aberrations. The children were born in 1979-1985.

Materials and Methods: Blood samples were obtained by venopuncture and collected and cultured by standart cytogenetic methodology. Chromosome analysis was carried out exclusively on first division metaphases containing 45-47 centromers. Indication of radiation exposure was based on an increase of total frequency of aberrant cells and frequency of aberration of chromosome type. We examined all cytogenetic abnormalities in metaphases and compared results between exposed group and mean spontaneous populating level among adolescents and children.

Results: There were observed the specific cytogenetic effects in the group of children from Pripyat. The results of cytogetetic selective examination of the children from Pripyat shows the statistic increasing of the specific markers of the radiation influence. Displayed data shows the fact of the variability of the individual sensibility in the researching criterion.

Conclusion: Thus the data of our study gives the certain idea about the chromosome aberration type distribution at the studied excerptron of the children from Pripuat town, contaminated region of estrangement zone. The prognostic significance of the found cytogenetic changes and their correlation with ecological factors effect will be learned in the process of the future cytogenetic control over the studied contingent.

We recommend continued observation on high-risk children and adolescents evacuated from Pripyat. We will work out the criteria and recommendation for the organisation of the remote genetic effects monitoring of children population in Ukraine.
