As part of the Rouge River National Wet Weather Demonstration Project, generic recreational risk-based soil cleanup criteria were developed incorporating similar methods and data used by the USEPA and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to calculate either screening criteria or cleanup criteria. Because of the varied nature of recreational land use activities, five generic categories of recreational land use were developed based on the similar nature of the activities. In addition, recently published activity-based data on soil adherence were used to develop the direct contact soil cleanup criteria. Interestingly, USEPA is in the process of using these data to develop activity-based soil adherence factors as part of new USEPA guidance on dermal exposure assessment. Development of the generic recreational soil cleanup criteria also included a literature search and review of other research methods to determine appropriate exposure assumptions.
