ASTM and Its Role in Developing Good Risk Assessment Practices. T. J. Schruben, United Capitol Environmental, 9175 Quarry Park Place, Suite 310, Columbia, MD 21046
ASTMs committees on Environmental Assessment and Environmental Risk Management have developed several standards that incorporate environmental risk assessment practices. These include standards on environmental site assessments for commercial real estate, risk-based corrective action for petroleum and chemical releases, lead-based paint management, and brownfields redevelopment. These standards have led to a significant increase in the quality and reliability of the practices covered by the standards, even though compliance with ASTM standards is voluntary. Publication of the standards has also increased awareness of the quality issues related to risk assessment for both the users and providers of the services. The ASTM consensus process insures that all interested parties have the opportunity to comment and participate in the development of the standards. The presentation will use several standards as examples to highlight the role that ASTM has played in promoting good risk assessment practices.
