Society for Risk Analysis 1998 Annual Meeting

Biomonitoring Studies and Surveys. B. A. Shurdut, Dow AgroSciences, 9330 Zionsville Road, Indianapolis IN 46268; and J. H. Ross, California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Pesticide Regulation, 1020 N Street, Sacramento CA 95814

An overview of exemplary biomonitoring studies and surveys involving pesticidal active ingredients will be presented. This will include discussion of efforts completed or ongoing that have been or are being sponsored by industry and governmental agencies. The presentation will discuss analytical chemistry and study design considerations and issues related to specific subpopulations, i.e., children. An overview of procedures for medical ethics review procedures, human volunteer recruitment, screening, biological fluids collection logistics and analysis will be addressed. Reference range concentrations of pesticide metabolites in the general population will be discussed, as well as frequency of detection and limits of quantitation. In addition, procedures for creatinine clearance correction and elimination half-life calculations will be presented. The role of biomonitoring in the assessment of residential exposures and subsequent absorbed dose from multiple sources, pathways and routes relevant to potential aggregate and cumulative exposures will be addressed. Further, utilization of biomonitoring data to support validation of aggregate and cumulative predictive exposure models will be discussed.
