Chemical Guide: Using the Internet to Communicate Chemical Plant Information. J. M. Solyst, Chemical Manufacturers Association, 1300 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22209

This presentation provides an overview of a web site being constructed by the Chemical Manufactures Association (CMA) – Chemical Guide — that will consist of a home page, plus web site sections for each of the approximately 1700 CMA member manufacturing facilities. The home page of Chemical Guide will feature overview information on Responsible Care, and a plant locator process that allows users to easily access facility web site sections. Each facility section of Chemical Guide will include information on environmental performance, community service and outreach activities, Risk Management Plan activities, and links to other sources of information. The key audiences of Chemical Guide will be plant communities, employees and others who use the Internet to collect environment, health and safety information. Market testing on model formats has indicated that different audiences are interested in different types of information. Residents in plant communities are particularly interested in how the plant is benefiting the community while environmental activists are more interested in performance and risk-based information. The challenge is to create a web site that is useful and interesting to a diverse audience.
