Preparing Technical Experts for Public Outreach. J. Z. Temple and S. S. Bath, Medical University of South Carolina, 171 Ashley Ave, Charleston, SC 29425
This DOE initiative at the Savannah River Site focused on the selection and preparation of scientists/engineers for public presentations targeting low income and minority communities. The project documents effective methods to deliver risk communication using environmental monitoring data as the demonstrated media.
The goal was to provide scientists/engineers with skills to enhance effectiveness in communicating risks. Selection was based on subject matter expertise, target population representation, a baseline assessment and communication skills. Primary and secondary presenters were selected on individual commitment, temperament, presentation skills and other characteristics. Preparation topics included knowing your audience, developing trust and credibility, focusing on community concerns, appreciation of customs and mores, and understanding outrage. Other briefings included adult learning techniques, group dynamics, presenting technical data in laymans terms, panel presentations, empathy transference, and handling difficult situations. Training techniques included use of an advisory committee, baseline assessments, diverse adult learning techniques, video taped dry-run presentations, and community member input into practice presentations. Findings will be presented.
