Comparative Risk: Evaluating Risks, Benefits and Tradeoffs. R. G. Tardiff, The Sapphire Group, Inc., Bethesda, MD; and J. Patterson, Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA), Cincinnati, OH
Comparative risk is an important tool for risk decision-makers. In evaluating the risks of a particular exposure or technology one should also weigh the potential benefits of that which is being controlled. In addition, there are risks and benefits associated with proposed alternative technologies or resulting actions that should be considered in the decision-making process. This presentation will describe comparative risk and its importance to decision-making. Several examples of how comparative risk could have helped decision-making will be explored. Examples of where comparative risk has been used to aid in decision-making will also be discussed. Comparative risk is not a panacea and there are methodological pitfalls and issues, which will be identified. The comparative dietary risk project and framework for balancing the risk and benefits of consuming contaminated fish will be highlighted.
