Computer-Based Internet Training Gives Customers Effective Training and Gives EPA Improved Product Stewardship. D. L. Fort and T. H. Brennan, U.S. EPA, Washington, D.C.
The Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) has developed a variety of computerized tools to assist customers in such areas as chemical exposure/fate prioritization and assessment. Many of OPPT’s tools can be found on our home page at www.epa.gov/opptintr. Distributing information on the tools (and in many cases the tools themselves) over the Internet has met much of customer interest and demand. However, distribution of tools was not our only goal. We believe that new communication technologies gives us a platform to develop distance learning courses designed to train users and to provide strong product stewardship to develop appropriate applications of varied products. Distance learning, through computer-based training courses on the Internet, gives students maximum flexibility to learn about our products anywhere, anytime. By completing the training courses, users can find answers to such questions as; which is the best tools for my need?, how do I use OPPT’s tools?, how do I use the results?, what are the appropriate uses of the tools?, where do I get more information? Using innovative communications technologies like computer-based training means that EPA can provide high quality training for our users without the expenses of travel and inconvenience associated with traditional classroom style training.
