Assessment and Management of Environmental Risks in Eastern European and Developing Countries: Summary of the NATO Workshop. I. Linkov, Menzie-Cura & Associates, Inc.; and J. M. Palma-Oliveira, University of Lisbon
Environmental contamination requires management decisions that weigh existing risks against the benefits and disruptions associated with environmental policies. There has been a great deal of discussion in both Western and Eastern nations regarding the use of risk assessment and management techniques with regard to the development of industrial and environmental remediational strategies. Recent developments and current trends in ecological risk assessment will be reviewed during the topical NATO Advanced Research Workshop in Lisbon, Portugal (October, 2000), which about 70 scientists from Western and Eastern Europe, the United States, Canada, and Japan plan to attend. The goal of the workshop will be to present risk assessment as a unified technique for selecting environmentally sound and cost-efficient policies, strategies, and solutions for various environmental problems. More specifically, it will focus on approaches to ecological risk assessment and management applicable to Eastern Europe and developing countries, where resources and data are limited. The talk will report the workshop findings including state-of-the-art risk assessment methodologies, knowledge gaps and priorities for future research.
Work supported by NATO.
