A Case Study of the Ecological Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund Process at a Large DOD Facility. L. J. Long, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and T. P. Burns, SAIC
In May 1999, a DOD Facility (the Site) in EPA Region 4, completed a screening level ecological risk assessment on 11 SWMUs in accordance with Steps 1 and 2 of the 8 step process described in Ecological Risk Assessment for Superfund, Process for Designing and Conducting Ecological Assessments (EPA 1997) which was an adaptation from the prior assessment paradigm. Because of the conservative nature, and chemical screening list not being geared towards DOD chemicals, no SWMUs were eliminated from further action in the screening level. The baseline problem formulation, of Step 3 of the process, pointed to no further action of nine of the SWMUs. The baseline assessment of the remaining 2 SWMU will follow steps 4 through 8 of the process. This presentation will describe the process for this multi-SWMU ecological assessment, using all available data including biotic data for ecological problem formulation, and how the process worked on this Site, a large DOD facility.
The Site, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District John Baehr.
