Industry and Government Agencies frequently use risk assessments for decision-making purposes. One generally thinks of risk assessment as the end product used in this decision-making process, however, risk assessment can also be used in another key application. Specifically, risk assessment can be used to determine risk drivers which can then be studied further in Market Basket Surveys. Risk assessment affords critical information in identifying the analytes (compounds and/or microbes) and commodities (food and/or consumer products) that drive the assessment. Studying food and consumer products at the consumer level via Market Basket Surveys provides realistic data for use in refined single compound (dietary or residential), aggregate, cumulative or microbial risk assessment. Such data, derived from statistically designed Market Basket Surveys, provides a key tool oftentimes overlooked in the decision-making process. Utilizing risk assessment with Market Basket Surveys affords the basis for an integrated decision-making process. A conceptual framework for this process will be presented.
