Comparative Risk Assessment for Perchlorate: How Does the U.S. EPA’s RfD Compare to Other Goitrogens That Are Found in the US Diet? R. B. Belzer, D. Johnson, M. K. Peterson, and R. C. Pleus, Regulatory Checkbook, Intertox Inc.
As more and more information on the toxicology of chemicals people are exposed becomes available, establishing safe levels to protect the public health becomes more complex problem. The U.S. EPA is currently establishing a reference dose (RfD) for perchlorate. In January 2002, the U.S. EPA released a draft of its risk assessment (Perchlorate Environmental Contamination: Toxicological Review and Risk Characterization), which proposed an RfD of 0.00003 mg/kg-day. To place this value into perspective, we conducted a comparative risk assessment where we compare and contrast the proposed perchlorate RfD to other levels of other common chemicals that have the same possible effect on an involuntary basis on the body as perchlorate (i.e., natural goitrogens) that the public is exposed to daily.
