Accessing and Vetting On-Line Risk Education Resources. D. M. Hassenzahl, University of Nevada Las Vegas

Risk analysis courses are increasingly common in environmental, agriculture, engineering, health, and many other academic programs. There are extensive on-line and electronic resources available for risk education, which is particularly appropriate for interdisciplinary education. There are also substantial limitations to accessing, validating and teaching from those resources. This paper discusses how and where risk educators can access on-line resources, including lectures, syllabi, links, software, case studies, problem sets, examinations, and other supplemental materials. It will also address opportunities for vetting these materials, through two formats. One is Merlot.org, a consortium of academic institutions designed for managing internet-based educational materials from a variety of fields. The second is the Risk Analysis Teaching and Learning (RATL) website, a non-profit, no-fee clearinghouse for academic risk education materials. Finally, it will explore peer review and copyright issues, including standards for and protecting rights to original creative materials while disseminating the same, and appropriate use of internet publications.
