A Risk Assessment Framework for Assessing Occupational Health and Physical Hazards. A. M. Maier, P. J. Hakkinen, D. W. Briggs, D. Seid, and S. T. Kim, Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA), Applied Biosystems
Identifying, assessing and managing health and physical hazards is important even in the earliest stages of research and development involving a new chemical or technology. A risk assessment framework has been developed for conducting health and physical hazard identification and risk assessments for chemicals nominated for initial laboratory usage. While some chemicals have extensive toxicity, physical hazard, and exposure data, others will not and the framework has to cover both data poor and data rich chemicals. The framework is divided into five areas: hazard assessment, toxicity and physical hazard assessment, exposure assessment, risk characterization, and risk management. This procedure is being used to develop risk characterizations that can be applied uniformly and globally within an organization for making risk management decisions about a particular chemical under evaluation.
