Assessing Developmental Neurotoxicity for Environmental Chemicals. R. C. Pleus and G. M. Bruce, Intertox Inc.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a standardized protocol for the evaluation of developmental neurotoxicity for use in human health risk assessment in 1991. The protocol tests for behavioral changes in motor activity, auditory startle, habituation, associative learning and memory. The protocol also consists of simple morphometric analyses and neuropathologic examination. Since then U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other interested parties have sought to revise and improve this protocol as concerns over procedures and analyses were found. We compare and contrast the developmental neurotoxicity protocol used in the assessment of offspring from dams given perchlorate in drinking water during gestation to developmental neurotoxicity state of knowledge. We report that in the studies reviewed, there still exist concerns regarding procedures and analyses of neurodevelopmental studies.
