Carcinogen Risk Assessment - Guidelines by Default? S. R. Poulter, University of Utah
Revised guidelines for carcinogen risk assessment have been more than ten years in the making, and EPA is now applying the 1999 revised draft guidelines as the interim guidance. This session will discuss the evolution of the guidelines as EPA has applied them in recent rulemakings, with emphasis on the issues that remain the most difficult for EPA to resolve - when to depart from the default linear low dose assumption, and how to evaluate risks for sensitive subpopulations such as children, among others. The potential influence of recent judicial decisions on risk assessment, such as Chlorine Chemistry Council v. EPA (D.C.Cir.2000), will also be discussed.
