Context for Application of Ecological Soil Screening Levels. R. Wentsel, S. Foster, and J. Burris; US Environmental Protection Agency, DC, and Syracuse Research Corp.

The Ecological Soil Screening Level (Eco-SSL) work group, composed of scientists and risk assessors from EPA, Environment Canada, DOE, Army, Navy, Air Force, states, industry, academia, and consulting companies, has developed scientifically sound, ecologically-based, soil screening levels. This paper will discuss how the Eco-SSLs are summarized for each metal. Each metal summary provides a brief review of the metal environmental forms, sources, background concentrations, mechanisms of toxicity, and essential element status (if applicable). Summary Eco-SSL values are presented for wildlife, avian species, plants, and soil biota. An Eco-SSL could not be calculated if the toxicity data base was of insufficient quality. Data utilized to generate an Eco-SSL for a given receptor is summarized. The individual receptor Eco-SSLs are compared to each other and to background soil metals concentrations to indicate the reasonableness of the screening values.
