Respected Risk Teachers to Lead Workshop on Bayesian Approaches to Human Health Risk Assessment.

RiskWorld news brief by Amy Charlene Reed, senior editor, reed@tec-com.com

February 24, 2000 -- Well-regarded risk professors and analysts are joining together to teach a workshop on Bayesian approaches to human health risk assessment in March.  Aimed at toxicologists and other scientists not well acquainted with the theory and practice of Bayesian logic and methods, the workshop is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Electric Power Research Institute and is being organized jointly by Resources for the Future, the Society for Risk Analysis, and EPA.

“What makes this workshop special is the very high quality of the people doing the instructing and their dedication to teaching,” said James D. Wilson,  senior fellow of Resources for the Future’s Center for Risk Management and fellow and former president of the Society for Risk Analysis.  “The instructors include senior faculty in statistics departments at major universities, highly regarded risk analysts and teachers, and several who are among the young stars of risk assessment.”

The workshop is intended to acquaint thought leaders in the field of human health risk assessment with the nature, advantages, utility, and limitations of Bayesian approaches to analysis.   It will feature a mix of lectures, hands-on exercises in breakout groups, demonstrations of applications of Bayesian methods, discussions by expert panels, and ample time for discussions. Topics will include the theory and practice of Bayesian analysis and its applications in medicine, risk-based decision making, exposure assessment, ecological risk assessment, and dose-response assessment.

“Attendees can expect to leave the workshop with a general understanding of the uses and limitations of Bayesian logic and its potential applicability to problems of dose-response assessment,” Wilson said.

The workshop “Bayesian Approaches to Human Health Risk Assessment:  Combining Different Kinds of Information” will be held March 27-29, 2000, at the Hospitality House Hotel in Williamsburg, VA, and attendance is limited to 50 people.  Faculty members include Professors Tom Louis of the University of Minnesota, Don Berry of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Mitchell Small of Carnegie Mellon University, Alison Cullen of the University of Washington, and Warner North of Stanford University, as well as practitioners such as Tony Cox of Cox Associates, Leslie Stayner of NIOSH, and Dan Byrd of CTRAPS.
