RiskWorld news brief by Mary Bryant,  associate editor, bryant@tec-com.com

August 3, 2001 -- Space is limited but still available to participate in the Tuesday, August 7, webcast of an information-gathering workshop on the scientific and medical aspects of human cloning sponsored by the National Academies.

The meeting will support a study by a joint panel of the National Academies' Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy and Board on Life Sciences to review relevant scientific and medical research on human cloning.

The study seeks to explain the distinctions between human cloning and animal cloning, to assess the current status of animal cloning and the outcomes of previous trials, to consider whether assisted reproductive technology can be applied to human cloning, to evaluate criteria for ensuring the safety of human cloning, and to consider public policy issues.

When the study ends in late December 2001, the panel will issue a short report on the information it has gathered, will recommend a process for evaluating future research, and will address the possibility of a moratorium on human cloning.

To register to hear this webcast, participants should send an on-line registration form as soon as possible. Registrations will be accepted, as space is available, until Friday, August 3. Links to a list of the panel members, the workshop agenda, and a form for sending comments (by August 1) to the human cloning panel are available on the workshop web page.
