Project Requests Input on Identifying Transportation Data Gaps

RiskWorld news brief by Amy Charlene Reed, senior editor, reed@tec-com.com

August  2001  - Planners, policy makers, managers, researchers, and others who have found gaps in the transportation data they need to make informed decisions or who have transportation questions for which data is not available may submit their findings to the Data Gaps Project, a collaborative effort to fill transportation data gaps.

In the initial phase of its work, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which heads the project, has begun identifying critical data gaps and important questions by asking anyone who uses transportation data to submit the data gap or information limitation they have found to DataGaps@bts.gov, including an explanation of its nature and impact and any other information that would describe the issue.

The bureau is keeping updated lists of the data gaps and questions it has already received on the Data Gaps Project web page

Its final report, to be published in mid-2002, will identify the data gaps, evaluate the cost-benefit of filling the gaps, and propose ways to fund and implement a solution.
