TERA Announces Voluntary Children's Chemical Evaluation Program Peer Consultation Core Panel for 2004

November 19, 2003 -- In June 2002, Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) announced the appointment of nine individuals as “core” panel members for Voluntary Children's Chemical Evaluation Program (VCCEP) peer consultations. These nine core panel members have spent many hours reviewing and discussing risk assessment and data needs submissions for five chemicals in 2003 -- vinylidene chloride, decabromodiphenyl ether, octabromodiphenyl ether, pentabromodiphenyl ether, and acetone. (Reports of these meetings are available as they are completed at http://www.tera.org/peer/.)

TERA, the convener of the peer consultations, decided to invite all current core members to serve an additional year to maximize on the first year’s experience and success. It was evident that the core panel is well-qualified and appropriate to the task of identifying research needs for understanding children’s health risk from chemical exposures. Eight core panel members accepted this invitation, while Nicole Cardello declined citing other responsibilities that would preclude her from continued involvement for another year. TERA greatly appreciates Ms. Cardello’s active participation on the core panel this past year and is disappointed she cannot continue.

The mix of backgrounds and areas of expertise found on the current core panel has worked well during this past year, so TERA has decided to continue with a similar mix in 2004. Cardello’s experience with the High Production Volume (HPV) program, testing requirements, and risk assessment, coupled with her knowledge of animal welfare issues, was very valuable for the VCCEP peer consultations. TERA has fortunately found another scientist with expertise in toxicology and risk assessment, as well as experience in animal welfare issues -- Chad Sandusky.

Sandusky is currently director of research and a senior toxicology advisor to the Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). At PCRM he promotes alternatives to the use of animals in research and is actively involved in reviewing and preparing technical comments on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's HPV test plans and on the VCCEP submissions. Previously, he was manager of toxicology and risk assessment at ENVIRON and worked as a senior pharmacologist at EPA. Additional information regarding his extensive qualifications may be found at http://www.tera.org/peer/VCCEP/VCCEPCorePanel.html.

TERA is grateful to all the 2003 core panel members for their hard work and service and looks forward to continuing successful peer consultations with the 2004 core panel. TERA anticipates considering new nominations for the 2005 core panel.
