May 31, 1996. The federal Commission on Risk Assessment
and Risk Management, which originally scheduled the release of
its long-awaited draft report on May 9 and rescheduled it first
for June 12 and subsequently for June 13, reconfirmed today that
the release date will indeed be June 13. However, the location
and the time of the commission's public meeting on that date have
changed. The public meeting for release of the report is now
scheduled to be held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington,
D.C., from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
When released, the report will be published on-line in its entirety on RiskWorld. Risk analysts interested in obtaining a hard copy have several options: (1) access the report on-line on RiskWorld and print it out personally; (2) fax a request for a hard copy to the commission at (202) 233-9540 or mail a request to the Commission on Risk Assessment and Risk Management, 529 14th Street, N.W., Room 452, Washington, D.C. 20045; or (3) attend the commission's public meeting.
The report is the culmination of the work of the federal commission, which was established six years ago by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments and is expected to have a broad-ranging impact on how the government uses risk assessment and risk management in federal regulatory programs.
"The report makes major recommendations about the uses and limitations of risk assessment and risk management in regulatory decision making, and it makes recommendations for specific agencies," said Executive Director Gail Charnley of the commission. These agencies include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Charnley emphasized that the commissions coverage of risk management was as detailed as its coverage of risk assessment. "The report proposes a framework for risk management that we hope will become known as the risk management paradigm. Its the next step in the development of risk analysis."
She added that the commission welcomes comments from all reviewers. "The whole purpose of this draft is to receive public comments before we issue the final report in August."
The commission requests that reviewers send all comments in a written format by fax to (202) 233-9540 or by mail to the Commission on Risk Assessment and Risk Management, 529 14th Street NW, Room 452, Washington, D.C. 20045. While the date originally set for comments to be received was July 18, that date has been extended to August 9.
To receive e-mail notices when the commission's report and
other related articles are published on RiskWorld, send an
