January 29, 1997 -- A new on-line discussion group called ECOTOXICOLOGY-L, which began operating five months ago, is one of the few such groups to specifically target risk assessment issues. (Another is the RISKANAL mailing list.)

ECOTOXICOLOGY-L "provides an open forum for the discussion of issues pertaining to ecotoxicology and risk assessment and encourages the dissemination and presentation of ideas focusing on environmental protection and restoration of damaged ecosystems," said the discussion group’s manager, Stuart R. Lynde, who is a graduate student at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Recent discussion topics have included the repeal of the Delaney Clause, nicotine toxicity, the zebra mussel, mammalian dietary LC50 values, algal blooms, and water testing. Member also have posted announcements regarding job openings, postdoctoral research positions, meetings, and workshops.

Lynde maintains a World Wide Web site for the discussion group at http://cherry2.biol.vt.edu/ecotox/, which includes an archive of past discussions and a listing of job openings (see http://cherry2.biol.vt.edu/ecotox/Jobs.html).

While the discussion group encourages announcements regarding meetings, symposia, and workshops, it does not allow corporate promotional materials.
