July 21, 1997 -- The Presidential/Congressional Commission on Risk Assessment and Risk Management, which issued Volume 1 and Volume 2 of its final report early this year (January and March 1997), will hold a public symposium on August 8, 1997, on defining a public health approach to environmental protection. The symposium will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Kimball Conference Room, 1400 16th Street, N. W., Washington, DC 20036 (see schedule).

The symposium will have two goals: (1) to define a public health approach to environmental protection, including advantages, disadvantages, and barriers to implementation, and (2) to examine the potential for an "environmental health improvement" market for investments in public health projects for a narrowly defined set of facilities already meeting current air standards. The "environmental health improvement" market will be discussed by using as an example the Environmental Protection Agency's most recent changes to the air standards for particulates and ozone. The rationale leading to the symposium was included in the Commission's proposal for the meeting.

Those wishing to attend the symposium should send their names, telephone numbers, and fax numbers to the Commission's office by August 1, 1997, by calling (202) 233-9537 or sending a fax to (202) 233-9540.
