Abstracts are due April 30, 1998, for the first ever China-Japan Conference on Risk Assessment and Management, which will be held November 23-26, 1998, at the China Hall of Science and Technology in downtown Beijing, China. The event will cover local and global perspectives of a wide range of topics, including health, environmental, and disaster risk assessment and management.

"We believe this will be a unique forum for risk researchers and managers in this part of the world to share their experiences, techniques, and theories," said Saburo Ikeda of the University of Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan, who is a vice-chairperson of the conference’s organizing committee. "We in Japan do not know the details of the risk profile in China. Researchers here are very interested in learning what Chinese researchers and public citizens view as the real issues in risk analysis, including the regional and global environmental problems associated with transfrontier pollution and resource management among the Northeast Asian countries."

The conference organizers, who expect participants to come from diverse organizations including universities, research institutions, corporations, and government agencies, outlined eight suggested topics in the call for papers:

  • Risk theory and uncertainty modeling
  • Risk analysis of natural and environmental disaster
  • Health and ecological risk assessment
  • Risk assessment approaches and methodologies
  • Safety and accident management in industrial production
  • Financial risk and insurance problems
  • Resources development and investment risk
  • Global and regional environmental risk

"We welcome contributions describing original work, research projects, and state-of-the-art reviews on other topics as well," Ikeda said.

The conference organizers request that authors submit on one page the paper title; preferred presentation (oral or poster); author’s (and co-author’s) name, affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address, fax number, and telephone number; five keywords; and a 200-250 word abstract. The information must be submitted in both Chinese and English for Chinese authors and in both Japanese and English for Japanese authors.

Authors will receive notification of acceptance by May 31, 1998, and full papers will be due on August 31, 1998. All papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

The chairpersons of the conference are Yang Zhanru of Beijing Normal University in China, Tomitaro Sueishi of Shiga Prefectural University in Japan, Lin Hai of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Hirotada Hirose of Tokyo Christian University in Japan.
