Mickey Leland National Urban
Air Toxics Research Center |
| The U.S. Congress
authorized the Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center in
the Clean Air Act Amendments
of 1990 and charged the research facility to sponsor and gather
scientific information on the human health effects caused by exposure to air
toxics. The center develops and supports research that will yield a better
understanding of the potential risks posed to human health by exposure to
air toxics, as defined by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, and will fill
the gaps in the scientific data required to make sound environmental health
public policy decisions. Named after the late Congressman Mickey Leland,
whose efforts on behalf of public health contributed significantly to the
passage of key amendments to the Clean Air Act, the center incorporated in
1991 and is located in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas. (Posted

| Northwestern
Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Program |
| Located at Northwestern Memorial
Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, the Northwestern (formerly National) Ovarian Cancer Early
Detection and Prevention Program (NOCEDPP) is a clinical and research
program. The clinical program combines the expertise of gynecologic
oncology, genetics, ultrasonography, biochemistry, and molecular biology to
offer a comprehensive detection program for women at risk for developing
ovarian cancer and for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The research
program is designed to identify detection tools, prevention methods and
therapies, and to improve quality of life for women at increased risk of
developing ovarian cancer and for those with the disease. The program also
helps women understand their risk factors for ovarian cancer and identifies
women at increased risk. (Posted June 2002, updated

| NIHSeniorHealth.gov |
| The National Institutes of Health's National
Institute on Aging and National Library of Medicine have developed
NIHSeniorHealth, a website for older adults, which provides easily
accessible aging-related health information for family members and friends
seeking reliable, easy-to-understand on-line health information. The website's
senior-friendly features include large print, with special buttons to
enlarge the text or turn on high contrast to make text more readable; short,
easy-to-read segments of information, with a "talking" function
that reads the text aloud; and simple navigation. (Posted June

Beltsville
Human Nutrition Research Center
|
|
Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center is the largest of U.S.
Department of Agriculture's human nutrition
research facilities and the home of the first human nutrition research
conducted by USDA, dating back to the late 1890s. The center aims to define,
through research, the role of food and its components in optimizing human
health and in reducing the risk of nutritionally related disorders in the
diverse population. Also see a news
release about BHNRC's new buildings. (Posted August

ILSI Risk Science
Institute (now part of
ILSI
Research Foundation)
|
|
This non-profit research institute was established in 1985 to improve risk assessment methods by
strengthening the scientific principles on which assessments are based. In
2005, the
ILSI Risk Science Institute and the ILSI Center for Health Promotion, which
were formerly separate entities, became part of
ILSI
Research Foundation, together with the ILSI Human Nutrition Institute.
The ILSI Research Foundation was formed in 1984 to create a philanthropic
vehicle for the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) to support
original research. Its Board of Trustees—from public and private entities
around the world—guide the Foundation in its mission to deliver
ground-breaking science that is useful now and into the future. The Research
Foundation’s current priority areas of work are currently grouped into three
centers of excellence:
Center for
Environmental Risk Assessment of Genetically Modified Crops (CERA),
Center for
Risk Science Innovation and Application (RSIA), and
Center for
Nutrition and Health Promotion.
Risk Science Institute is part of the International
Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a nonprofit, worldwide foundation
established in 1978 to advance the understanding of scientific issues
relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, risk assessment, and the environment.

Institute for Operations
Research and the Management Sciences
|
|
This institute (known by the acronym INFORMS) serves the
scientific and professional needs of investigators, scientists, students,
educators, managers, and institutions in the fields of operations research
and the management sciences and in related fields such as
information technology. The institute aims to help these professionals provide rational bases
for decision making by seeking to: (1) understand and structure complex
situations using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and
manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems and
(2) use this understanding to predict system behavior and improve system
performance. The INFORMS web includes searchable databases of
bibliographies based on the journal International Abstracts in Operations
Research, of information about conference papers, and of links to
members' web sites and to working papers.

| Risk
Communication & Perception |
|
Risk,
Science, Health and the Media |
|
"The concept of risk poses challenges for how we think about the
media's role in contemporary society. It raises issues about power,
inequality, expertise, communication and uncertainty. It also prompts
debates about Risk Society and scientific citizenship" (see Ulrich Beck's
World
Risk Society).
This research group, established
in 1999 at the Cardiff
University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, "examines
the whole circuit of communication, addressing questions such as: How is
risk, science, technology and health reporting 'produced' (by sources
and journalists)? How are concerns represented in the media (from news
reporting to science fiction)? How is risk interpreted/incorporated (by
media audiences, policy makers, and 'publics')?" (Posted March 2001,
updated December 2011.)
