ROCHESTER, Minn., Oct. 22 /PR Newswire/ -- The Mayo Clinic/Williams-Sonoma Cookbook will be honored as the world's best health cookbook on Oct. 23 at the Versailles World Cookbook Fair near Paris, France.

More than 20,000 cookbooks were published worldwide last year, and 1,500 of those were nominated and evaluated in this year's International Versailles Awards. The nominated cookbooks first compete with other books in their own language, and then are evaluated against all nominated books in any language, printed anywhere in the world. One best-in-the-world book is selected in 25 categories.

"We are honored to be recognized in this way," says Dr. Donald Hensrud, editor-in-chief of The Mayo Clinic/Williams-Sonoma Cookbook and a Mayo Clinic physician nutritionist. "Our goal in publishing this book is to help people eat well by providing recipes that taste great and are easy to prepare."

Mayo Clinic published this book as part of its commitment to serve as a health information resource for the public.

"Nutrition is vitally important to maintaining good health," says Dr. Hensrud. "You can control what you eat, and when you make healthy choices, you can reduce your risk of disease. That's why this cookbook is important."

Earlier this year, The Mayo Clinic/Williams-Sonoma Cookbook also won the 1999 Julia Child Cookbook award for best healthful cookbook.

Revenue Mayo Clinic receives from this book is used to support Mayo's research and education programs. The Mayo Clinic/Williams-Sonoma Cookbook (Time-Life, $29.95) is available in most bookstores, Williams-Sonoma Stores, and many other retail stores nationwide. It also can be ordered directly from Mayo by calling 800-291-1128, extension 300.

This is the 10th anniversary of the world cookbook fair awards. They are sponsored by The International Cookbook Revue and are held annually in France or Italy.
