PRINCETON, N.J., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- GNB Industrial Power, a division of Exide Technologies (NYSE: EX), today announced an agreement with NTT Facilities, Inc., covering the next 12 months, to supply Large Valve Regulated Lead Acid (LVRLA) batteries valued at more than $10 million. Based on AbsolyteŽ technology and produced in Fort
Smith, Ark., the MST500 and MST1000 batteries deliver 500- and 1000-ampere
hours, respectively, of back-up power in telecommunications applications.
During their 12-year relationship, the Exide Technologies unit has been
NTT's primary supplier of LVRLA batteries. GNB has furnished NTT (Nippon
Telegraph & Telephone) with AbsolyteŽ II, IIP, and XL technologies in
addition to the current MST product (which is NTT-specific). The
development of the AbsolyteŽ XL technology allowed NTT to replace
outdated flooded-type batteries, which posed a safety risk during
earthquakes. According to Mitch Bregman, President of GNB Industrial Power,
"NTT has been a valuable partner and customer. The long-term
commitment on both sides of the equation means better products and
services for NTT and its customers." The AbsolyteŽ IIP and XL products represent the world's most advanced
valve regulated technology in terms of both reliability and performance.
The patented designs are based on more than 17 years of industry-leading
experience and expertise in the design and manufacture of sealed lead-acid
battery systems. Exide Technologies is the global leader of stored electrical energy
solutions. With annual revenues of more than $3 billion, operations in 89
countries and 21,000 employees, the company serves both the industrial and
transportation markets. Industrial applications include network-power batteries for
telecommunications systems, electric utilities, railroads, photovoltaic
(solar-related power) and other critical uninterruptible power supply
(UPS) markets; and motive-power batteries for a broad range of equipment
uses including lift trucks, mining vehicles and other commercial electric
vehicles. Transportation uses include automotive, heavy-duty truck, agricultural,
marine and other batteries; and new technologies being developed for
hybrid vehicles and new 42-volt automobile applications. Further
