NEW YORK, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The tragic death of filmmaker Jawed Wassel last week on Long Island has not totally silenced an articulate voice on the U.S. immigrant experience according to his production team.

"His sensitive, informed story will be shared through his art and intelligence," says Kate Wood of SilkRoad Pictures, a co-producer of his feature film FireDancer, which is expected to have its official opening later this year.

Wassel, a naturalized U.S. citizen, fled his native Afghanistan in 1979 during the Russian invasion. After going to school and working on films in Europe, he came to the U.S. in 1985 through a church sponsorship. He worked his way through the City College of New York, where he earned a BA in film and romance languages. He spoke English, Farsi, French and German fluently. He combined this background and his professional experience at New York's Duality Playhouse where he taught the Sanford Meisner method acting techniques, while maintaining an ambitious schedule of script writing.

Wassel devoted the last six years to making the autobiographical movie FireDancer, which portrays struggles and realities of families as they find new roles in the U.S. The film dramatizes conditions that force citizens of any country to risk everything for a better future. Wassel felt that the U.S. offers the best chance for that future.
