Profile of the Group

The Risk Science & Law Specialty Group of the Society for Risk Analysis is a group of scientists, lawyers, and others interested in the interface between risk assessment and laws, regulations, and courtroom proceedings. The group’s goal is to "provide leadership in collaborative scientific and legal research and in identifying and illuminating issues that arise from risk-related legislative acts, regulatory rules, and judicial proceedings.

New Developments

In September 2000, the group initiated a major revision of its 1998 casebook and is soliciting help.  If you are interested in joining this effort, please contact Wendy Wagner at Wagner9@attglobal.net.  The project will be completed in late October 2000.

In October 2000, the group published the full text of its 1998 casebook online (see menu).  Selected excerpts from the 1999-2000 casebook also are online.

Major Projects & Activities

One of the group's major projects is its online casebook of risk-based legal decisions, which is ongoing and cumulative.  The group's goal is to collect and synopsize the key cases that involved risk analysis and to organize and present them so they are more accessible and useful to legal and scientific risk practitioners. The Casebook incorporates the currently "hot" risk-related cases along with key historical cases. Go to Casebook.

The group also holds sessions and workshops at the annual meeting of the Society of Risk Analysis, which usually is held in December.  For more information on this year's meeting, visit SRA's web site.
