Assessing Regional Impacts from Global Climate Change: The Role of Stakeholder Participation. A. Fisher, Penn State University
At the SRA 1997 annual meeting, a "nugget" presentation described initial steps for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Assessment (MARA) of potential risks from climate change. Updates on differing aspects of the MARA have been presented at the SRA annual meetings since then. An unusual aspect of the MARA process has been the crucial role of stakeholder participation in shaping the assessment questions to be examined, in ensuring that the results are provided in formats and forums appropriate to potential users, and in helping to disseminate findings. A 65-page Overview report was released in March, 2000, shortly before its supporting Foundations draft was circulated for peer review; it is expected to be revised in response to peer-review comments and released prior to SRA’s annual meeting. An 8-page Overview Summary also is planned for release during 2000. Based on both qualitative and quantitative data, this paper summarizes lessons learned about the challenges and benefits of such stakeholder involvement in assessing potential regional risks and in communicating with their peers about the findings.
