| Women and Autoimmune Disease :
The Mysterious Ways Your Body Betrays Itself |
| by Robert G. Lahita; July 2005; ISBN 0060081503 |
| This book concentrates on how autoimmune
diseases afflict women, who make up 75% of cases nationwide. A healthy
immune system defends the body from antigens such as viruses and bacteria.
But sometimes the immune system erroneously attacks healthy cells, leading
to autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, multiple sclerosis and vasculitis.
The author draws on research and case studies to identify 16 conditions
that have been categorized as autoimmune diseases (he includes chronic
fatigue syndrome, though its cause remains uncertain) and describes at
length the symptoms, causes and possible treatments for these debilitating
ailments. Treatment is complicated, according to the author, since
patients are often diagnosed too late because their complex symptoms mimic
those of other conditions. A patient with vasculitis, for example, was
first thought to have meningitis. This clearly written text should be
extremely useful to people with these difficult ailments, their families
and caregivers. |

Women and Depression : A Handbook for the Social, Behavioral, and Biomedical Sciences
|
|
by Corey L.M. Keyes and Sherryl
H. Goodman, Editors; October 2005; ISBN 0521831571 |
| Throughout the world, rates of depression are
greater among females than males, and this gender gap emerges during
adolescence and persists throughout adulthood. Until recently, women's
health has centered on the topic of reproductive health, because research
focused almost exclusively on biological and anatomical differences
distinguishing men and women. Social and behavioral research on gender
differences in health now employs multiple disciplinary frameworks and
methodologies, and researchers seek to understand the higher rates of
specific diseases and disorders in women and men. Symptoms of depression
and the diagnosis of depression are more prevalent in women, and research
that focuses on biological, psychological, and sociopolitical explanations
for this gender gap should now be brought together to better inform
efforts at treatment and prevention. Women and Depression is a handbook
that serves to move toward a more integrative approach to women's
depression in particular and mental health for all more generally. |

| Breaking Out : A Woman's Guide
to Coping with Acne at Any Age |
| by Lydia Preston; July
2004; ISBN 0743236238 |
| Acne is no longer just a
teenage affliction. In fact, dermatologists often refer to it as a woman's
disease, and drugstore shelves are filled with acne products specifically
geared toward adult women. But how do you choose from the overwhelming
selection of treatments? Which products are appropriate to use as you grow
older, become pregnant, or enter menopause? How can you work with a
dermatologist to get the most out of prescription acne medications?
The author answers all of these questions and more,
with up-to-date information drawn from her years of reporting on
dermatology, as well as her own long personal experience with acne. In
this book, she shares the wisdom of dozens of doctors and
scientists who have devoted their careers to studying and treating acne,
including guidelines for buying and using over-the-counter products; treatment
for acne scars; emergency acne remedies and camouflage tips; and alternative
treatments, including herbal remedies, acupuncture, dietary approaches and
ways to unlock the mind-skin connection. No one
has to live with acne or its consequences. This book is an invaluable
guide to understanding and combating acne that women of all ages can turn
to with confidence. |

Risks in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Answers to All Your Questions About
Medications, Morning Sickness, Herbs, Diseases, Chemical Exposures and
More |
| by Gideon Koren; October
2004; ISBN 0778800849 |
| This book is an
indispensable guide to the risks of medications, environmental toxins, and
herbal remedies taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Since
the discovery of birth defects caused by thalidomide, expectant mothers
have questioned the effects of medications and other substances during
pregnancy and breastfeeding. This book offers
authoritative descriptions of the risks involved during pregnancy and
breast-feeding, from prescription drugs, diseases, chemicals, vitamins,
herbs, foods, alcohol, cigarette smoke, recreational drugs, and other
abuse substances. Some of the topics covered
include tests for determining risks before conception, during pregnancy
and after birth; charts and scores of answers to Frequently Asked
Questions; charts of safe/unsafe medications, chemicals, vitamins, herbs
and foods; practical advice for treating illnesses, avoiding exposure to
toxic chemicals, and eating safely.
The book has information that counselors for Motherisk share two
hundred times a day. Since 1985, the Motherisk
program at The Hospital for Sick Children has provided counseling based on
the most up-to-date evidence research on tertatogens, substances or
environmental factors that can cause birth defects. Motherisk is one of
the biggest programs of its kind worldwide, counselling some 2,000 callers

Deborah Greening, and James Windell; June 2004; ISBN 0738209511 |
| Written by a team of
experts from diverse medical and mental health backgrounds, this warm

methods for postpartum depression. The condition is fairly common-the
"baby blues affects four out of five mothers, and other postpartum
mood or anxiety disorders affect an additional 10-17 percent of
mothers." And because postpartum depression often isn't widely
discussed, the stories of real women who have suffered and recovered from
it could be comforting to women currently experiencing it. Bulleted lists
of everything from signs and symptoms to risk factors make this volume

| Consciously Female: How to
Listen to Your Body and Your Soul for a Lifetime of Healthier Living |
| by Tracy Gaudet and Paula
Spencer; December 2004; ISBN 0553381865 |
| This excellent compendium
on women’s health is based on the integrative model of medicine
popularized by Weil (8 Weeks to Optimum Health, etc.), emphasizing a
combination of Western treatments with alternative therapies in a
patient-centered approach. The authors provide a guide to individualizing
women’s health decisions relating to fertility, menstruation and
menopause. Drawing on numerous case histories, Gaudet highlights the
importance of understanding one’s personal health as a developing
narrative and of creating the time and space to learn about oneself
through conscious and unconscious methods. Among other tools, she
recommends "dreamimagery," a technique that involves breathing
and muscle relaxation and may spark images and bring unconscious thoughts
to light. This volume covers every aspect of female health from a
person-centered point of view. |

| Diabetes in Pregnancy |
| by B. J. A. Van Assche;
July 2004; ISBN 0444515135 |
| Major progress has been
made in understanding the physiopathology of diabetes and pregnancy and
this new volume in the EBCOG series includes current practice and
developments in the area. Diabetes affects at least 3 percent of the
pregnant women and in some areas in the world the percentage is much
higher. Furthermore, the incidence of diabetes increases worldwide.
Diabetes during pregnancy affects both the mother and the fetus. It is
therefore necessary on the one hand to have pre-existing diabetes under
control before and during pregnancy, and on the other hand to screen for
gestational diabetes and if necessary to treat. During pregnancy and
labour optimal fetal and maternal surveillance is important and the
newborn needs close supervision. Recently it has been shown that the
intra-uterine environment can have a transgenerational effect on the
offspring, indicating the importance of achieving normal fetal growth. |

| The First Steps to Fitness: How
to Stop Thinking About It and Start Doing It |
| by Elizabeth M. Williams;
March 2004; ISBN 1402200331 |
| This easy-to-use,
non-threatening fitness book focuses on the psychological aspects of
weight loss and fitness, teaching women that their attitudes toward their
bodies are more important than an iron will or unswerving commitment to
exercise or diet. The author uses the metaphor of building a house in
showing women how to achieve the physique they desire. In each chapter,
the author suggests that you use your childhood memories to create an
enjoyable diet and exercise routine.
Requiring much introspection and writing in a journal, the author
guides readers to pick out patterns in their lives regarding self-image
and to work on overcoming negative experiences and thinking of themselves
in a more positive light. In addition to her advice concerning the mental
side of fitness, the author also provides specific suggestions for
exercising and eating. She encourages women to be positive and flexible,
stressing the point that attitude is everything. |

| Managing Motherhood, Managing
Risk : Fertility and Danger in West Central Tanzania |
| by Denise Allen; July 2004;
ISBN 0472030272 |
| In this book, the author
persuasively argues that development interventions in the Third World
often have unintended and unacknowledged consequences. Based on twenty-two
months of fieldwork in the Shinyanga Region of west central Tanzania, this
rich and engaging ethnography of women’s fertility-related experiences
highlights the processes by which a set of seemingly well-intentioned
international maternal health policy recommendations go awry when
implemented at the local level.
An exploration of how threats to maternal health have been defined and
addressed at the global, national, and local levels, the book presents two
contrasting, and oftentimes competing, definitions of risk: those that
form the basis of international recommendations and national maternal
health policies and those that do not. The effect that these contrasting
definitions of risk have on women’s fertility-related experiences at the
local level are explored throughout the book.
This study employs an innovative approach to the analysis of maternal
health risk, one that situates rural Tanzanian women’s fertility-related
experiences within a broader historical and sociocultural context.
Beginning with an examination of how maternal health risk was defined and
addressed during the early years of British colonial rule in Tanganyika
and moving to a discussion of an internationally conceived maternal health
initiative that was launched on the world state in the late 1980s, the
author explores the similarities in the language used and solutions
proposed by health development experts over time.
This set of "official" maternal health risks is then compared
to an alternative set of risks that emerge when attention is focused on
women’s experiences of pregnancy and childbirth at the local level.
Although some of these latter risks are often spoken about as deriving
from spiritual or supernatural causes, the case studies presented
throughout the second half of the book reveal that the concept of risk in
the context of pregnancy and childbirth is much more complex, involving
the interplay of spiritual, physical, and economic aspects of everyday
life. |

| Ovarian Toxicology |
| by Patricia B. Hoyer
(Editor); March 2004; ISBN 0415287952 |
| In recent years, there has
been an alarming increase in environmental by-products that may be harmful
to ovarian function. Along with this dangerous situation, the modern trend
toward delaying motherhood poses immediate concerns regarding the
long-term impact of environmental risks on human fertility. The
uncertainty of our reproductive future intensifies the need for a single
reference that investigates the chemicals with the potential to jeopardize
fertility. This book updates our current understanding of the effects of
environmental chemicals on ovarian function. It presents an overview of
ovarian physiology, examines the key ovarian target sites, assesses the
effects of specific chemicals demonstrated in animal studies, and
evaluates related human epidemiological data. Featuring the most complete
review available of ovarian metabolism of xenobiotics, chapters also
discuss ovarian cancer and modeling and testing for ovarian effects. With
its clear handling of data and issues that are crucial to fertility
studies, this comprehensive exploration of ovarian toxicology identifies
the realistic risks for damage that our environment has the potential to
inflict. It will be welcomed by toxicologists and ovarian physiologists,
those in the pharmaceutical industries and regulatory agencies, and
postgraduate researchers striving to safeguard women's fertility and
ensure our reproductive future. |

other things, exactly how sugar consumption triggers diabetes, the
importance of the right kind of fats in the diet, the dangers of
high-grain diets, the relation of diet to yeast infections, and how
caffeine blocks iron and calcium use. They also advocate the return, in
moderation, of red meat, eggs, and fat to the diet. Although this is not a

| Thrive!: A Woman's Guide to a
Healthy Lifestyle |
| by Carrie Carter, MD;
January 2004; ISBN 0786260432 |
| This sound, solid book of
health advice for women begins in a rather original way with a chapter on
personality types--because how women deal with stress and health depends
on their personalities. That's a refreshing change from the usual
one-size-fits-all health book for women, and it helps this one stand out
from the pack. Another strength is the book's up-to-the-minute medical
advice; Carter, a pediatrician, lays out recent medical studies, debunks
fads and upsets a few apple carts. There are surprises: some orange sodas
and root beers have as much caffeine as espresso (who knew?), and
chocolate may be good for you (thank heavens). Carter's advice is
sensible, particularly as she encourages a balanced eating plan combined
with regular exercise or offers sobering information on heart
disease. |

| Women and Autoimmune Disease :
The Mysterious Ways Your Body Betrays Itself |
| by Robert G. Lahita and Ina
Yalof; July 2004; ISBN 006008149X |
| Autoimmune diseases,
including chronic fatigue syndrome, vasculitis, juvenile diabetes,
alopecia, Graves' disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple
sclerosis, are among the hottest topics in the medical community. Although
these diseases express themselves in different ways, in all of them, the
body's immune system begins to attack normally functioning, healthy cells.
Despite the recent surge in interest and research, these fascinating
diseases are highly mysterious, frequently misdiagnosed, and controversial
in cause and treatment. They are often interconnected in ways that are
both misunderstood and life-threatening. And one of the biggest puzzles is
why 80 percent of autoimmune disease sufferers are women.
In this authoritative yet thoroughly approachable guide, world-class
immunologist Dr. Robert Lahita brings to bear his years of intensive
research, patient care, and diagnostic acumen to shed light on the
mysteries of these conditions, with a particular focus on how they affect
-- and how he treats -- women. Dr. Lahita
strikes a refreshing balance between medical explanation and readability.
Through the use of case studies, he describes the early warning signs
(including minor triggers such as headaches, nausea, or exhaustion),
symptoms, diagnostic processes, and the latest and most innovative
treatments for the familiar -- as well as many of the lesser known --
autoimmune diseases. This scientifically sound, grounded, thorough, and
sensitive work will be greeted with appreciation by anyone who wants to
better understand these perplexing and often debilitating diseases. |

provide physicians with a core of knowledge that will be relevant to
making sound clinical decisions in the face of sometimes conflicting
interests. The volume evaluates the results of the Motherisk Program,

maternal and fetal outcomes from a sizeable database of the most common
cases of cancer in pregnancy. In reviewing this program and the experience

| Assess Your True Risk of Breast Cancer |
| by Patricia T. Kelly, Ph.D.; Henry Holt; October 2000; ISBN 0805064680 |
|
Ask women what their number-one health fear is and
most will not hesitate before answering "breast cancer." The
recent proliferation of easily misunderstood and often contradictory
statistics about breast cancer and its causes, however, is scaring many
women who have only a small risk of contracting the disease.
In this book author Patricia Kelly, Ph.D., a medical geneticist who
specializes in cancer risk assessment and counseling, helps women
evaluate what their risk really is and then determine what the next step
should be based on that risk. The book discusses everything from studies
on how age and family history relate to breast cancer risk, to those on
hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer, enabling a woman to
understand and focus on her own personal situation
Whether providing advice on how to get more extensive testing,
counseling, and preventative measures when necessary, or offering the
welcome assurance that the risk is small enough to warrant just annual
checkups, mammograms, and regular self-examinations, this carefully
researched text replaces
rumors and scare tactics with solid, practical, and vital
information. |

| The
Breast Cancer Prevention Program |
| by David Steinman, Suzanne Levert, Samuel S. Epstein;
October 1998; ISBN 0028626346 |
| Although the rates of breast cancer have escalated--from one in 20 four decades ago to one in 8 today--still, the cancer establishment insists that we have turned the tide against breast cancer. Not so, say the authors of this groundbreaking book, and they back their claim with the most thorough analysis of all known and suspected causes of breast cancer yet undertaken. What they reveal is the heartening news that breast cancer is preventable--news ignored by the cancer establishment--and that its rise is directly related to an out-of-control spread of the very factors that increase our risk of breast cancer: from environmental and workplace carcinogens to unhealthy lifestyle choices, from hormones pumped into commercial livestock to estrogenic medications, from premenopausal mammography to cosmetics and household hazards. For the first time, this book exposes all the causes of breast cancer and lays out all the possible preventive measures. The good news is there's plenty every woman can do to keep this dread disease at bay, and The Breast Cancer Prevention Program provides a fascinating, informative, and empowering blueprint for health. |

Survivors : Women's Experience With Breast Implants |
| by Susan M. Zimmermann; April 1998; ISBN 1566396123 |
| Susan Zimmermann talked with forty women about one of the most sensitive issues of body image and health - their breasts, the chief attribute of femininity. In the aftermath of the early 1990s controversy over the use of silicone breast implants, how do women decide to undergo surgery to enhance or reconstruct their bodies? How does surgery alter a woman's self-image? How do they face the possibility of debilitating autoimmune disease from rupturing or leaking implants? Now, having faced years of medical and personal uncertainty, many have coped by reassessing their lives and their relationships, by sharing information and support with other women with implants, outreach that becomes a means for
self-empowerment. |
