U.S. EPA Updates CAMEOŽ and ALOHAŽ Software

August 4, 2004 -- A CAMEOŽ user identified a problem with AEGL (Acute Exposure Guideline Level) data that was just added to the Chemical Library (a new Level of Concern found under the Properties tab in the RIDS). The error was non-conservative, so the CAMEO management and development team corrected the information and has reissued the chemical databases used in CAMEOŽ and ALOHAŽ.

For those users who already have CAMEOŽ v1.1 on their machines, an Updater is available that replaces just the Chemical Library. (Note: Do not run the Updater if you have CAMEOŽ v1.0. The version number is found in the lower right hand corner of the Navigator. See the instructions on the web site for more details.)

CAMEOŽ is a system of software applications used widely to plan for and respond to chemical emergencies. It is one of the tools developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Office (CEPPO) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Response and Restoration (NOAA OR&R) to assist front-line chemical emergency planners and responders.

The new version of ALOHAŽ also corrects a couple of bugs that had been identified since the original release in March. One bug affected the ability to copy the multiple footprints into another program while the second one could have disrupted communication with an attached meteorological station (SAM Option). Both have been corrected.

ALOHAŽ (Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres), an atmospheric dispersion model used for evaluating releases of hazardous chemical vapors,  is one of the three separate, integrated software applications that comprise the CAMEOŽ system.

On a different note, a new import tool is now available for those users who want to share the ALOHAŽ output with ArcMap 8.x, which is a geographic information system (GIS) software from Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI).

The CAMEO team appreciates the challenge of installing new CAMEO software in an operational environment and tries to minimize program changes. However, if an error is identified within the program that could potentially compromise human health and safety, they will fix it and get a new version out to users as soon as possible.
