A RiskWorld news brief |

| October 12, 1998 -- The on-line newsletter Risk Excellence
Notes released a special edition this month that offers a comprehensive look at the
status and future of risk assessment modeling. "In this Special Edition
on modeling, viewpoints on the challenges of predicting risk were sought from the
regulatory community, citizens groups, project managers, and those who create
models," the newsletter editors stated. "We believe it is our job to present all
angles." (Go to http://riskcenter.doe.gov/ren.html
to view the October-November 1998 special edition.) Topics covered by this edition of the newsletter, which is published by the U.S. Department of Energys Center for Risk Excellence, include modeling environmental risks, the use of single-point values versus distributions, a tool for speeding model diagram tasks, evaluation of selected environmental decision support software, predicting the toxic effect of chemicals on humans, multimedia modeling and risk assessment, better assessment science integrating point and non-point sources, and a terrestrial wildlife exposure model. Also available on-line at the Center for Risk Excellences web site are back issues of the newsletter, which was revamped this year "to broaden the scope and audience to include risk issues that are important to the larger risk community, not only to the U.S. Department of Energy," the newsletter editors stated. In addition to the newsletter, other resources included in the web site are links to information on risk assessment tools (http://riskcenter.doe.gov/cre_rass.html) and an extended information on the Year 2000 computer problem (at http://riskcenter.doe.gov/yr2000.pdf). The web site also explains the purpose and history of the center, which the U.S. Department of Energy established in 1997 to help the department address risk issues associated with its environmental management activities.
