Energy in Brief: What Is the Status of the U.S. Nuclear Industry? The Energy Information Administration (EIA), which provides the official energy statistics from the U.S. government, periodically publishes on line Energy in Brief - What Everyone Should Know About Energy. Each brief answers a question that is relevant to the public with an explanation in plain language about an important energy topic and a recommendation of resources for further reading. Dose Response Assessment Boot Camp—Risk Assessment from 0 to 95% Confidence in 5 Days, September 21-25, 2009.  Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) will hold this course—five days of intensive hands-on training in hazard characterization and dose-response assessment—in Cincinnati, Ohio. Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis has extended its call for abstracts to July 27, 2009, for those interested in presenting research at its 2009 annual conference. The conference theme is "Advancing the Practice of Benefit-Cost Analysis." The conference and the society's annual meeting will be held on October 20-21, 2009, at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, D.C. Chromium Review Panel to Meet July 28-29, 2009. Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) has been engaged as an independent third party to convene a Science Advisory Board (SAB) that will provide guidance on the design and conduct of a series of studies investigating the mode of action by which hexavalent chromium is carcinogenic in rats and mice following drinking water exposure.

TERA is inviting interested parties to observe the SAB meeting and provide input about the types of data that would facilitate a regulatory decision regarding mode of action and dose-response approach for an oral carcinogenicity assessment of hexavalent chromium. Read more. (posted 7/8/09)

Peer Workshop on Toxicological Assessment and Development of RfDs for Acetanilide Degradates. Under the auspices of the Alliance for Risk Assessment (ARA), Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) will convene a 2-day independent expert peer workshop to develop reference doses (RfDs) for the degradates alachlor t-ESA, alachlor t-OXA, acetochlor t-ESA, and acetochlor t-OXA. The meeting, supported by Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences, will be held on Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12, 2009, at the Northern Kentucky University METS Center, which is located near the Greater Cincinnati International Airport. The public is invited to attend and to provide written and/or oral comments. The meeting also will be available in real time to registered off-site observers via a web cast. International Risk Releases Terrorism Trends Report.  International Risk Ltd., based in Hong Kong, released today the report "International Risk Assessment: Terrorism Trends in 2009." Stating that "terrorism has become a significant threat to the peace and security of South Asia," a situation that will likely intensify in 2009, the report also highlights how "an ineffective response, at least to date, by the Indian and Pakistani governments to counter spiraling violence is contributing to an increasingly tense environment," which could erupt into military conflict between the two nuclear powers. New Course in Public Health Informatics. The Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Maryland, and its collaborator, the National Library of Medicine, are pleased to announce a new course titled Public Health Informatics, which will be offered as an evening course beginning February 17 on the university's campus and ending May 2, 2009. This course represents collaboration designed for the primary purpose of sharing knowledge and building interest in public health and disaster informatics. The primary audience for the course is Department of Defense (DoD) and other government employees (federal, state, local), with a limited number of seats for agency contractors.
