The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) mission is to promote the technological welfare of the nation by marshalling the knowledge and insights of eminent members of the engineering profession. The NAE is the portal for all engineering activities at the National Academies. The NAE is a private, independent, nonprofit institution. In addition to its role as advisor to the federal government, the NAE also conducts independent studies to examine important topics in engineering and technology. (Posted October 2000.)

Institute for Reliability and Risk Analysis

Founded in 1981 and located in the Department of Statistics, Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, at the George Washington University, the institute's goal is to initiate basic and applied research aimed toward increasing the fundamental knowledge base and methodology in reliability, quality control, and risk analysis. Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute

This institute houses a select group of scientists, physicians, educators, and policy researchers focused on the serious health effects of environmental pollutants. Institute members investigate ways people are exposed to chemicals, study how chemicals react in the body, educate the public about risks from chemical exposure, and assist in formulating policies to protect human health.

Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center

The U.S. Congress authorized the Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and charged the research facility to sponsor and gather scientific information on the human health effects caused by exposure to air toxics. The center develops and supports research that will yield a better understanding of the potential risks posed to human health by exposure to air toxics, as defined by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, and will fill the gaps in the scientific data required to make sound environmental health public policy decisions. Named after the late Congressman Mickey Leland, whose efforts on behalf of public health contributed significantly to the passage of key amendments to the Clean Air Act, the center incorporated in 1991 and is located in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas. National Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Program

Located on the Northwestern Memorial Hospital campus in Chicago, Illinois, the National Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Program (NOCEDP)--an international collaborative effort between Northwestern University's Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, the National Cancer Institute, and more than 20 other Comprehensive Cancer Centers-- represents an unprecedented, unified group of clinicians, scientists, and institutions that are clinically applying their understanding of the biochemical and molecular biology of ovarian carcinogenesis, invasion, and metastatic dissemination to improve the early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer. The National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging and National Library of Medicine have developed NIHSeniorHealth, a website for older adults, which provides easily accessible aging-related health information for family members and friends seeking reliable, easy-to-understand on-line health information. The website's senior-friendly features include large print, with special buttons to enlarge the text or turn on high contrast to make text more readable; short, easy-to-read segments of information, with a "talking" function that reads the text aloud; and simple navigation. Health Risks -- Food & Nutrition

Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center

Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, the only human nutrition research center located at a comprehensive agricultural research facility in the United States, is the oldest and most comprehensive of five human nutrition research centers (which include Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, Children's Nutrition Research Center, Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, and Western Human Nutrition Research Center) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. The center aims to define, through research, the role of food and its components in optimizing human health and in reducing the risk of nutritionally related disorders in the diverse population. ILSI Risk Science Institute

This non-profit research institute located in Washington, D.C., was established in 1985 to improve risk assessment methods by strengthening the scientific principles on which assessments are based. The Risk Science Institute works toward this goal by facilitating cooperation among scientists in government, academia, industry, and public interest groups through a wide range of research activities, working groups, workshops and conferences, publications, and education programs worldwide.

Risk Science Institute is part of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a nonprofit, worldwide foundation established in 1978 to advance the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, and the environment.

Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences

This institute (known by the acronym INFORMS) serves the scientific and professional needs of investigators, scientists, students, educators, managers, and institutions in the fields of operations research and the management sciences and in related fields such as information technology. The institute aims to help these professionals provide rational bases for decision making by seeking to: (1) understand and structure complex situations using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems and (2) use this understanding to predict system behavior and improve system performance. Risk Communication & Perception

Risk, Media, and Communication Research Group (RMC)

This major research group, established in 1999 at the Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, explores, extends, and critiques the "risk society" thesis (see Ulrich Beck's World Risk Society) and its relationship to theories of media and communication. On the one hand, the RMC group engages in post-structuralist/post-modernity/risk modernity/globalization debate; on the other hand it has strong empirical emphasis in seeking a middle-level theory of journalistic and everyday narratives in the construction, surveillance, and mobilization of risk discourse. John Tulloch, head of the school, directs the RMC group, and Cynthia Carter is its deputy director. (Posted March 2001.)
