DENVER, Colorado, Sept. 8, 2005 /PRNewswire/ -- CH2M HILL, a global full service engineering, construction, and operations firm, has been tasked by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to identify and manage temporary housing solutions for more than 7,000 people in Alabama displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The company has begun immediate work and deployment of field teams.

A CH2M HILL team is coordinating its efforts through FEMA's Housing Area Command Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and plans to expand its Montgomery, Alabama, office for purposes of identifying housing solutions. Potential venues include state parks, mobile homes, RV parks, former hospitals and cruise ships. Once sites have been identified, CH2M HILL will coordinate all logistics and ensure essentials including electricity, water and sewer systems are in operation.

CH2M HILL will fully manage each site for at least the next year, leading all operations and maintenance duties. In addition, the firm will be responsible for vital needs including transportation, security and medicine for each housing location.

In addition to managing housing needs in Alabama, CH2M HILL has been active in other Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery efforts as well. Kaiser Hill, a CH2M HILL company and contractor responsible for cleaning up the former Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant west of Denver, has sent more than 2,500 giant fabric bags to the Army Corps of Engineers to use as sandbags to close breaches in New Orleans levees. Each bag was filled with about 16,000 pounds of sand and lowered them into the breached section of the levee with Chinook helicopters helping stop the flow of water into the city.

Headquartered in Denver, employee-owned CH2M HILL is a global firm providing engineering, construction, operations, and related technical services to public and private clients. With more than $3 billion in revenue, CH2M HILL is an industry leading program management, construction management for fee, and design firm, as ranked by Engineering-News Record (2005). The firm's work is concentrated in the areas of transportation, water, energy, environment, communications, construction, and industrial facilities. CH2M HILL has more than 14,500 employees in 200 offices worldwide.
