The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements
(NCRP), with the support of the National Aeronautics Space
Adminstration, will conduct a one-day symposium on the
Acceptability of Risk from RadiationApplication to
Manned Space Flight on Wednesday, May 29, 1996, at the
Crystal Forum of the Crystal City Marriott, Arlington, Virginia
(no registration fee). The symposium will focus on the rationale
for establishing an acceptable lifetime risk of fatal cancer due
to exposures to ionizing radiation in space. Subjects will
include space radiation and its biological effects; the basis for
dose limitations recommended by the NCRP and the International
Commission on Radiological Protection; alternative approaches for
limiting doses; and the philosophy of astronaut protection and
the communication of the associated risks. For more information,
