American Industrial Hygiene Association
Founded in 1939, this professional organization is dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of environmental factors arising in or from the workplace that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well-being of workers and members of the community. The association's web site is an essential source for information on occupational and environmental health and safety issues. AIHA's numerous committees, including its Risk Assessment Committee, plan, develop, and institute many of the association projects, including position statements, continuing education courses, publications, and technical and roundtable sessions presented at various conferences. Crossroads

The National Safety Council created the Crossroads web site to provide safety, health, and environment managers the unbiased information, tools, and contacts they need to be better informed about issues in their field.

The site has grown to become a safety, health, and environment search engine and news network that uses subject area experts to answer questions and guide site visitors to information and resources on the Web, including a collection of over a thousand searchable safety, health, and environment links and timely news articles. When environmental consulting firm The Technical Group launched EnvironRegs.com in January 2000, the web was the only Internet reference source that offered the most current U.S. regulatory coverage on environment, health, and safety and transportation of hazardous materials issues in all fifty U.S. states and the federal government. The web site is a one-stop source for comprehensive regulatory information needed by environment, health, and safety professionals. Two-week trial subscriptions are available for first-time users. Inside Washington Publishers' Online Document Service

Inside Washington Publishers specializes in reporting information on federal policy making in environment, defense, trade, telecommunications, energy, and other big-dollar, high-impact areas through some 23 newsletters, such as Inside EPA Weekly Report and Risk Policy Report, that are available by subscription. Its online document service, which provides Inside Washington subscribers with key documents relating to policy and other developments in the areas of energy and environment, health care, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, civil aviation, and telecommunications, is currently accessible to the public. National Pesticide Telecommunications Network

This cooperative service of Oregon State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides objective, science-based information about pesticide-related subjects, including pesticide products, recognition and management of pesticide poisoning, toxicology, and environmental chemistry. The network is a source of factual chemical, health, and environmental information about more than 600 pesticide active ingredients incorporated into over 50,000 different products registered for use in the United States since 1947. NPTN operates 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific time, 7 days a week, excluding holidays; accepts calls toll free from the United States, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands; and responds to written requests (see contact information).

NPTN also hosts the National Antimicrobial Information Network, a toll-free telephone service that responds by telephone or mail to information requests about antimicrobial products--sanitizers, disinfectants, and sterilants. (Posted October 2000.)

Radiation, People and the Environment

This booklet, prepared by the International Atomic Energy Agency (the United Nations agency for nuclear science and its peaceful application) in cooperation with the United Kingdom's National Radiological Protection Board, provides a broad overview on the subject of ionizing radiation. The booklet includes the effects and uses of ionizing radiation, as well as the measures in place to ensure it can be used safely; the benefits and risks of practices that use such radiation in medicine, industry, and energy production; and some topical concerns about environmental pollution, waste management, emergencies, and transportation safety. This "partnership dedicated to promoting safety and injury reduction" provides research, investigation, analysis, and education on safety issues, including product safety and product defects, and delivers strategies that address product hazards. Strategic Safety specializes in motor vehicle issues but is also experienced in areas including safety policy and regulation, injury biomechanics, liability, environmental dangers, and consumer, industrial, and medical products and practices. WSPortal
Launched at the Fourth World Water Forum, March 16-22, 2006, in Mexico City, the Internet resource WSPortal is a collection of web-based practical guidance for the effective development and implementation of Water Safety Plans--health-based risk assessments that identify problems in a water system and chart corrective actions to take--for the improvement and maintenance of health through water. WSPortal is part of Partnership to Health through Water, a global alliance of programs and initiatives dedicated to reducing the incidence of water-related disease worldwide. The partnership's collaborating partners include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organization. (Posted March 2006.)
